Instructions

  1. You soak the beans in water for 8 hours.
  2. You drain the water from the beans.
  3. You put the beans and ham bone in a pot.
  4. You add 8 cups of water.
  5. You boil the liquid.
  6. You simmer the soup for 1 hour.
  7. You add the onion, carrots, celery, garlic, and bay leaf.
  8. You simmer the soup for 1 more hour.
  9. You remove the bone from the pot.
  10. You shred the meat from the bone.
  11. You put the meat back into the soup.
  12. You add salt and pepper to the pot.
