- 8 cups water
- 1 diced onion
- 2 sliced carrots
- 2 sliced celery stalks
- 2 minced garlic cloves
- 1 bay leaf
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- You soak the beans in water for 8 hours.
- You drain the water from the beans.
- You put the beans and ham bone in a pot.
- You add 8 cups of water.
- You boil the liquid.
- You simmer the soup for 1 hour.
- You add the onion, carrots, celery, garlic, and bay leaf.
- You simmer the soup for 1 more hour.
- You remove the bone from the pot.
- You shred the meat from the bone.
- You put the meat back into the soup.
- You add salt and pepper to the pot.

- You use a meaty ham bone for flavor.
- You store the soup in your fridge for three days.
- You serve the soup hot in bowls.
