Description

South African Bobotie is a savory dish made with minced beef and topped with a creamy egg custard.


Ingredients

  • 500g minced beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon curry powder
  • 2 slices white bread
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons chutney
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1 tablespoon slivered almonds
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. In a pan, sauté onions and garlic until soft.
  3. Add minced beef and cook until browned.
  4. Mix in curry powder, chutney, Worcestershire sauce, raisins, and seasoning.
  5. Soak bread in milk, then mash and mix into beef.
  6. Transfer mixture to a baking dish.
  7. Beat eggs with remaining milk and pour over the beef mixture.
  8. Sprinkle slivered almonds on top.
  9. Bake for 30-40 minutes until custard is set.

Notes

  • Serve with yellow rice and raisins.
  • Can be made a day ahead and reheated.
  • Adjust curry powder to taste.
